Why do you do “the work?”
As a lifelong Connecticut resident, it goes without saying that I believe in its people. As a matter of principle, I grew up in a working-class neighborhood in New Haven, surrounded by folks of varying backgrounds who instilled in me a love for community and learning. I believe in the power of collective action and neighborliness. I believe that at the local level, the work that I do will go a long way in ensuring that mutual respect and goodwill are not only reflected in our state institutions, but that we serve as a model for the nation going forward.
What are some specific places or things you love in Connecticut?
I believe that the art scene of Connecticut is something that goes underappreciated. Every year, typically around May, in New Haven over in Westville there is a 2-day art festival called the “ArtWalk”. The “ArtWalk” is a celebration of the awesome artistic stylings of the residents of Westville, from innovative fashion to thought provoking canvases and sculptures. It is an event where everyone from residents to businesses gather around to observe, converse, reflect, paint, eat, and enjoy themselves under the dimly lit sky and an assortment of string lights. It has become a seminal moment marking the beginning of the Spring and is a reminder of the gleaming camaraderie that makes me proud to call this place home.
